UConn Hurlers Debute at Mary T. Cosgrove Memorial, Call for Nov. 12 Tourney Participants

by David Cosgrove on November 5, 2011

UConn Husky Crest – Indeed, that’s a vicious looking animal with hurley in hand/paw. Well done!

On the heels of their first ever matches as part of the annual Mary T. Cosgrove Memorial Hurling 7s Tournament on October 23rd, the University of Connecticut Husky Hurling Club will host the Husky Hurling 7s Tournament, in Hartford, Conn. – aimed at new and retired hurlers – on November 12th. First match time TBD. Details to be updated shortly to hobokenhurling.com. All North American and New York GAA junior clubs are invited to attend. Details below.

The Bronx Warriors and Baltimore/Washington D.C. combo team captured the A and B Divisions, respectively, at the inaugural Mary T. Cosgrove Memorial, held at the Rockland GAA fields, Orangeburg NY on Oct. 23. Participating squads included Allentown (Pa.), Baltimore (Md.), UConn, Hoboken, Rockland (N.Y.), Bronx, Shannon Gaels (Queens, N.Y.) and a hybrid “Roboken” team. It was a great day for hurling with over 70 hurlers lacing up, togging out in the “Fastest Game on Grass.” UConn is the first collegiate hurling team to be born in the U.S. Northeast.

It was a great day for hurling. Home-made t-shirts and all, the Huskies acquitted themselves well, defeating Roboken in their first ever game, losing narrowly to Allentown before defeating Washington in the final group matches. The Huskies then took on Washington in a nail-biting semifinal loss (by one point) to end what would have been a dream final against Roboken who, despite losing all their group games, pulled it out of the hat to defeat Allentown in the opposite semifinal. Washington defeated Hoboken with a great team effort to take the inaugural “B” Division tournament.

The A Division produced some great hurling displays from the home based hurlers. New York’s rising star of the Boxing ring Tommy Hardwick traded his gloves for a hurl and scored a hat trick in one of the group games. Over a dozen Americans played in the A Division showing the growth in popularity and skill level of the players in just one year of hurling development. Graham Jackson put in a hard day’s work for Rockland as he kept the Pearl River boys in contention with several scored from play while Eoghan Kyne shone for the Shannon Gaels with his tenacious hurling in the Queen’s rearguard. Colm Reilly continued his good form from the year in goals for the Jersey Boys as he proved a formidable shot stopper in the Hoboken net.

After the matches, recently named NYGAA Junior Hurling Chairman Joe Joe Sullivan made presentations to the winning Baltimore captain and to American born Eddie Hogan – the Bronx Captain who at 16 – epitomizes why Junior Hurling was brought back to New York. David Cosgrove, the Hoboken Guards Chairman who recently lost his mother, Mary Cosgrove to cancer (for whom the competition was named in honor of), thanked those present for attending and welcomed the new teams and those who traveled long distances for the occasion.

Note from the Writer

The Cosgrove and Leonard families are honored that the NYGAA would recognize my mother – Mayo born, beloved wife to longtime NYGAA (and previous Skehana) hurler and footballer Pat Cosgrove (my father) – with an annual tournament, which brings home based hurlers of both the North American and New York County boards together. The Mary T. Cosgrove Memorial Tournament Trophies carry her name, but should always be in honor of all those in the GAA community around the world recently diagnosed with, fighting or unfortunately having passed from cancer. Every day is precious, and many win the battle. The key is–we are not alone in the fight. Your presence and words of support are very much appreciated.

Hi, I was just wondering if there are any football hurling activities in the Connecticut region? I’m from Monaghan and i’ll be living in CT for 18 months and would love to get involved in either sport!
Any help or advice would be greatly apreciated.

Regards,
Mark McCaughey
