Are you a local area athlete interested in trying a new sport which is growing across the country, having fun and getting a great workout in the process? The Hoboken Guards Hurling Club will hold 90-minute Thursday night training sessions this fall, starting Sept. 5th, with the intention of introducing the world’s fastest, most skilled sport on grass to area residents, at one of our two new fields!
*
The Hoboken Guards, which compete in the NY Gaelic Athletic Association and North American GAA tournaments, seek to recruit area athletes interested in being part of our club. Whether you want to wear the Hoboken Guards black, red & white as a prospective starter on our team, or simply want to learn the sport and meet new people, all are encouraged to give hurling a try.

A Facebook event page has been set up for this training. Please join our Facebook group to stay informed on club training, events/activities and “social outings.”

From this fall training weekly schedule, we will form a second team to compete in a soon-to-be-unveiled spring-summer 2014 league (competing against regional American-based hurling clubs), and we will send this team to Boston in 2014 to compete in the North American GAA Championships.

The new, well constructed and planned fields at 1600 Park & Sinatra Park in Hoboken will serve as primary training facilities for the Hoboken Guards now and going forward, with the latter serving as the possible venue for match play on the Hudson River against other hurling clubs from the northeast and potentially the world. Yesterday, Sept. 3, was the ribbon cutting ceremony for 1600 Park, and the Guards were invited to attend and chatted with the Mayor and City Council members about the endless possibilities of advancing the sport of hurling in Hoboken and New Jersey in general.

If you have a hurley or two of your own and sliotar (ball), that would be great. Bring it/them. If not, a hurley will be available to utilize at the sessions, as will balls. Helmets will be available to use at the field, but hurlers are encouraged from the start to purchase their own.
