HOBOKEN–Discover a new sport, enjoy live Irish music, food and great drink specials, enter to win an authentic Irish hurling jersey, a hurley (stick) and meet new people -  at the co-sponsored “Pub Crawl with the Guards” season opening event Saturday, April 16. The crawl starts at 3 p.m. at Trinity Restaurant, Bar and Lounge, 306 Sinatra Drive, Hoboken, and “officially” finishes at 8 p.m.

The purchase of one $10.00 wrist bracelent will give you access to all of the above! You can purchase the band at each of the participating pubs, which includes Trinity, Nag’s Head, Mulligans, Shannon Lounge, Cork City and Moran’s. The featured event of the day will commence when ladies on the crawl will have the chance to bid on their favorite team player/s as part of a Hurler Auction. The final roster of times at each participating pub will be updated on Thursday, April 14.

Sign up at either of the two locations below to let us know you’re coming. You can also take a peek at who will be in attendance, or their potentially fake facebook photographs:

Organized by the Hoboken Guards Hurling Club (HGHC), Hoboken Social Sandbox and Irish in New York Meetup Group, the goal of the event is threefold:

1) Raise awareness of hurling to New Jerseyans and specifically area residents

2) Raise funds for the HGHC

3) Recruit potential players and supporters

“We’ll Start the Bidding at…”

Each auctioned off Guard will have a gift certificate to an area restaurant or business included with his auction bid as part of his respective “date.” Attention girls: most of the to-be-auctioned lads will sport an Irish brogue, and all will don a shirt and tie! Stop drooling, it’s OK, ladies can bid on as many dates as they choose. A percentage of proceeds from this auction will be given to the Hoboken Shelter, whose mission is to be a community partnership that transforms lives by providing meals for the hungry, shelter for the homeless, and services to support people to become housed.

The Guards and Hurling

The Guards are New Jersey’s first mixed Irish and American hurling club, with a roster now exceeding 30 players ranging in age from 17 to 39. Most the of the guys are in their 20s and early to mid 30s. Dedicated team members commute to weekly training sessions and matches from as far away as Princeton, Queens (N.Y.) and Connecticut.

Hurling, known in Ireland as the Emerald Isle’s national pastime, is growing rapidly in the United States in both open men’s leagues and the collegiate ranks. The Guards are entered into the New York Gaelic Athletic Association’s 2011 Junior Hurling Championship, which starts April 23rd at Manhattan College’s Gaelic Park in the Bronx, and will compete against Limerick/Westmeath (Bronx), the Shannon Gaels (Queens) and Rockland Hurling Clubs.

“We wanted to host a fun season kick-off event, allowing area residents to meet our team, watch matches on pub flatscreens to gain an understanding of the game and start to learn what hurling is all about,” said Conor Costigan, Treasurer and Assistant Coach of the HGHC. Costigan, 29, hails from County Tipperary, Ireland, and has lived in Hoboken since 2004. “It’ll be great craic, you don’t want to miss it! Come out and show town pride by meeting and supporting your hometown Hoboken Guards.”
