Guards on the March at the 2011 Hoboken St. Patrick's Day Parade, holding both Club and Sponsor banners
HOBOKEN — More than 150 years ago today a group of Irish immigrants made history by playing the first recorded match of their native sport on American soil.
Choosing a name from their own history, the Kenmare Guards played a hurling match in Hoboken, N.J., on St. Patrick’s Day less than a mile from where the first recorded game of baseball took place 12 years earlier.
It is in the spirit of this rich history the Hoboken Guards now humbly carry on the name and the spirit of our predecessors.
The Guards consider March 17 our birthday, so drink a pint in our honor, but team members don’t go too crazy — the season starts April 10.
